To a certain degree our characters are pretty limited in what they wear. Plate wearing classes can wear the most variety of armor and clothing offered in game while cloth wearing classes can wear the least. However there is still quite a bit that can be done with in game armor and clothing to present the look you are after for your character.Your warrior may wear those assless pants for their armor rating and stats, but they may not suit the image of the character’s personality and leave you looking for other things to cover her up with. Over the last three years I’ve learned a great deal about finding appropriate RP clothing combinations that show the personality of the character. I’ll display some of my favorites here to give others ideas for their own characters.
Cloth
Cloth items are universal. Any class can wear most of them (save for specialty items by class or tradeskill which are rare). There is an abudance of robes but a decided lack of skirts and few pants that don’t look ridiculous or look like rags. With due diligence, however, you can find items that look good and some even mix and match well.
The most easily matched pants, by far, are the Tuxedo Pants. I have multiple characters that have a set of these in their wardrobe. Combined with various shirts, vests, etc. they can present a variety of looks. Crafted by tailors, they are a basic flat black and can be paired with many different boots. I, most often, pair them with the Recruit’s boots that are part of the human and dwarven starting outfits.

The above outfits are all using tuxedo pants. The first is the Frostweave Tunic and White Swashbuckler’s Shirt (both crafted by tailors), next is the Gossamer Tunic (world drop) and Russet Hat (vendor bought), and the last is the Overlinked Chain Tunic (gray drop).
Some items will have the same model but different colors. When well done, they can look quite different. A good example of this is between the Mooncloth Robe and the Elegant Robe as pictured below.

Your greatest abundance of robes are going to be found in cloth items. Try them on the character using the dressing room first though. Sometimes a robe that looks good on one race, looks ridiculous on another.Personally, I think the strapless gowns that were introduced with The Burning Crusade look great on the Draenei models, but look absolutely silly on the human ones. As if their chest is going to fall out of it at any moment. There are plenty of things to dress your character in. Don’t put something on them just because it’s low cut or shows a lot of skin. Make sure it looks good first.

Leather
It’s not just for kink anymore! There are an abundance of colorful, nifty looking leather items out there to fit a variety of personalities and styles. Many times a leather piece can be paired with a mail or plate piece and look like a full set, such as the Dreamsinger Legguards and the Thick Murloc Breastplate below.

Always check out-of-the-way vendors too! The Mystic Sarong comes from a dark iron vendor out near Dun Algaz. It is a limited quantity purchase so be sure you get there before the lousy farmers do. This leather skirt has vibrant colors and can be paired with a variety of tops and vests. Try it on with different things and see how you like it!

Plate and Mail
Mail has a tendency to blend well with Leather for more casual looks. But plate is where you would look for formal armor. If your character keeps a set of dress armor or something along those lines, there are a number of sets out there that would suit. My personal favorite is the Hyperion set (with an oddball BP that I found I like better). The colors are vibrant and eye-catching and look good with my warrior’s coloring (even if most of the plate armor looks like steel bikinis).

Summary
What it comes down to is creativity. By using what can be found in game, even if it is gray, a quest item, a special holiday item, or whatever, you can create some great outfits. I’ve put together costumes, fishing outfits, casual outfits out of gray items. I’ve used starting clothing, high-end greens and blues, a huge variety of things. Be creative. Try on everything. Think about how it could be put to use. I think you’ll find there are more options than one might think.
Below find some of the outfits I’ve put together from odd items. You’ll get the idea.

This is great. I’ve been wanting to play a ‘best-dressed’ type of character with my new roleplay Shaman. However, is there really ever a way to look GOOD and maintain the stats that you need to play, too? Or is usually a matter of having your ‘roleplay wardrobe’ and your ‘realplay wardrobe’ (the one with the teddybear belt and polkadot green-and-purple pants). >_<
Thanks,

Fantastic write up. Going to put a link on my blog so more people find this! Well done!
@Rhoelyn – Simple answer? No. Very seldom are you lucky enough to have fighting gear that looks good for RP too. Especially classes that don’t wear robes. Often the gear sets are not really “sets” but are just pieces picked up here and there (unless you’re lucky enough to be wearing a full Tier set). All of my characters have separate outfits from their fighting gear and my warrior has such an awful fighting set that she wears a tabard. Never underestimate the power of the Tabard!
@Desdarii – Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the article.
