Have you ever met the character in game that upon first encounter (and second, and third) is snide, rude, arrogant or just downright mean? I’ve met plenty of them. They treat the other characters around them like crap and then say “Oh, that’s just the character’s personality.”

Okay. Fine. I’ll accept that. If you want to play a character that is an ass, you’re welcome to do so. There is no law, though, that says I have to interact with a character that is an ass.

Actions have consequences. If your character is going to be an ass to those around her, don’t get your tail bent when others don’t want to interact with her. I choose to avoid unpleasant people IRL. Why would I associate with them in game. This is supposed to be fun. Putting up with someone who is a jerk, even if it is IC, is not fun.

Now people will often advise you to /whisper the person you are interacting with and tell them it’s all IC. This does not make the character any less unpleasant.

I’m sure there are some people out there that enjoy interacting with asses. I am not one of them.

Don’t get upset if my character snubs your unpleasant character. After all, it’s IC, right?

One Response to “IC Is Not An Excuse”
  1. Also, don’t get into a royal funk if you’re walking around with ((Sorry, this character is a bit of an ass)) in your RSP, and then get upset when nobody decides to interact with you. In fact, if you do want to play a character who’s an asshole, by all means, put a warning label in your RSP so I know who to avoid.

I also second that you should be prepared to take the consequences if you act like an ass. Sitting behind an anonymous computer monitor isn’t a free ticket to behave however you like with no consequences from that behavior. Don’t whisper me OOC and complain if one of my characters decides to react to the way they’re treated. There’s no reason to expect that every Warcraft character will turn the other cheek if they’re insulted or treated rudely and say “I know you’re rude and treat everyone around you like shit, but I’ll join your instance group and/or help you anyway!”

Besides, that Damn Role Player said it better. I deal with enough assholes at work. I don’t choose to deal with them in a game I play for fun.
