Dear Ogg,

Usually when one makes the statement that you “eat like a pig” they are not actually implying that you are one. It is merely a metaphor. So fear not gentle reader! You won’t be sprouting that cute little curled tail any time soon.

However that statement is usually an implication that your table manners are a bit lacking. Catilda will not go into the finer points of meal etiquette but someone should cover some of the basics with you.

When sitting at the table, there should be at least two silver metal objects next to the plate. I’m sure you recognize the knife. The other one (with four pointy tips instead of one) is called a fork. These are not weapons. Please do not use them as such.

The knife is used for cutting your meat into bite sized portions. Let me specify a bit more; into portions that you can fit into your mouth without stuffing. The fork is used for lifting those bite sized portions from your plate to your mouth. One should always completely chew the mouthful of food before placing another in the mouth.

If you happen to get food around your mouth while eating, the use of a napkin (not your bracers) is appropriate for wiping the mouth. Using your tunic is also not appropriate. And when drinking at the table, be sure you put the liquid in your mouth slow enough that it does not spill out the sides and run down your chin.

Last but not least, one should always chew with the mouth closed. If you do this, you will be sure to keep half-chewed food from escaping the mouth and spilling down the front of your clothing.

Start practicing some of these basic manners and you will no longer be thought of as a pig by friends and family!
